GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 27th. March, 1919.
8570.
My Lord,
I have the honour to confirm my telegram
of 8th. February reporting the death of Dr. Harold Macfarlane, the Government Bacteriologist in this Colony which occurred on the 7th. February from Cerebral Haemorrhage.
2.
Dr. Macfarlane, who was during the past
year employed in research work connected with the outbreak of
Cerebro-spinal Meningitis, had on the departure on leave of Dr.-
J. T. C. Johnson taken over the duties of Principal Civil
Medical Officer in addition to his other duties and was apparent-
-ly in good health and the sudden haemorrhage cannot be fully
accounted for by his Medical attendant.
3.
It is, however, well known that Dr.
Macfarlane's duties have for some time been very onerous and his demise is a serious loss to this Government and science generally.
4.
His widow left the Colony on the S.S.
"Kitano Maru' on the 8th. March for England and the Crom Agents have been requested to make payments to her of the allowance due under the Widows and Orphans' Pensions.

HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,

&c..
I have the hour to be, My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,, humble servant
Ahlus Sevem
Officer Administering the Government.
